The 7/7 or the 7 july 2005 London Bombings, were four coordinated terrorist attacks, killing fifty-two civilians and injuring more than 780 people. Four Al-Qaida associated persons detonated four bombs at 08:50 local time, where three bombs went off and affected travelers and civilians on three subways. The last bomb exploded on a double-decker close to the Tavistock Square. The attacked double-decker close to the Tavistock Square The suicide bombers entering the underground network
The attack happened at a time when the world's eyes were directed at London, which were awarded the Summer Olympics 2012, the day before. London were also preparing for the trial of Abu Hamza al-Masri, a former Egyptian activist, known for his preaching of jihadism. As well, the English government were preparing for the upcoming G8 summit in Scotland. In a statement, which is not verified yet, al-Qaida took full responsibility for the bombings.
In recent years, the underground system in London has been regarded as one of the biggest terrorist targets in Great Britain. The tube network is an attractive destination, as a result of both the amount of passengers and travellers, and because it is easy for the terrorists to hide among the population while they carry out their plan. As a consequence of the threat towards the underground network, the inhabitants of London have become more aware of the danger.
Consequences of the bombings:
Besides the injured and killed, the attack led to a closed collective network in central London. In addition, large areas of the city were closed. The car traffic was heavily restricted, with thousands of security operations. As well, several mobile operators in London were heavily overloaded, which led to a re-prioritizing of the network to ensure that emergency calls were prioritized. Not until two days later, the mobile network functioned as normal again.
As for the economy, the stock exchanges in many countries fell several percent after the shocking terrorist attack. London, which is an important international financial centre, experienced a dramatic economic decline, due to lack of transport possibilities and the problems regarding the mobile network.
In addition, government in other countries introduced stricter security measures, both on airports and public transport networks. New technology was also invented, in order to prevent any new attacks.
An other consequence of the London bombings, is that the term Islamophobia, has came into common usage. According to wikipedia, the term is: “prejudice, hate or fear against Islam or Muslims.”Several mosques were tried torched and thousands of hateful e-mails were sent to Muslims all over the world.
Locations of the 7/7 Bombings.
In the wake of the London Bombings several professor and politicians were asked to help explain the different reasons of these attacks.
This is what they found out:
- The bombings were going to sabotage the upcoming G8-meeting in Scotland.
- To promote further discussion in the "War on Terror" debate
- To create a debate in the news about the arguments of Tony Blair for participating in the Iraq war.
- They were motivated by anger towards Britain's involvement and participating in the Iraq war.
